The history of black entrepreneurship in this country can be traced to a time before there was an America. Many of the accomplishments of blacks in this country have gone unnoticed by students both black and white. However, the impact of black business enterprise on this country is as strong as the domination of the hip-hop popular culture by black musicians, a few of whom are entrepreneurs themselves.

To see how blacks became entrepreneurs, we must first learn what an entrepreneur is and what factors led people to pursue entrepreneurship as a career.

The dictionary defines an entrepreneur as one who organizes, operates, and assumes the risk in a business venture in expectation of making a profit.
