Suggested Activities to Help Expose
Black Youth to Entrepreneurship
This section will give you suggestions about how adults can
help you to become better prepared for the world of entrepreneurship.
Learning how to start and manage a small enterprise will require
the support and encouragement of others in your community. Successful
entrepreneurs know how to respond when asked, "How can
I help you with your business?" You must be prepared to
answer this question. Here are some examples of how adults and
community organizations can help you to become a successful
entrepreneur. Make sure that you share these ideas with your
parents, neighbors, relatives, teachers, and other interested
adults.
For Parents:
 |
Expose your child to entrepreneurial magazines
like Black Enterprise. Discuss the contents of the magazine
and other business-related topics on a regular basis.
Make theses discussion a part of the dinner conversation.
|
 |
With your child, visit black-owned businesses
in your community and in other cities when you are on
vacation or visiting relatives.
|
 |
Create contractual/entrepreneurial opportunities
for your children at home. Use this method of teaching
them about work and business instead of giving them a
weekly allowance.
|
 |
Start a part-time business with your child.
Some examples of successful parent/child business partnerships
have been in retailing clothes, delivering newspapers,
making silk flower arrangements, janitorial services,
etc.
